YOU ARE THE LIGHT

Light

Light and darkness are antipodal. We live in a physical world of darkness and light. Modern technology enables us with better light to see and penetrate the darkness. Also in the spiritual realm Christ enables us to let our light shine in the world:

Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
NIV

The Light of the World

Christ declared that his people are to be the light of the world. Christ is the light of the world: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12.) We are to be like Christ and therefore reflect his light as the moon reflects the light of the sun. The moon doesn’t give any light when it is covered with clouds. We do not cover up a candle and a city on a hill can be seen by all. Some people have the idea that anything we do must not be seen of men, lest we are seen as seeking vain glory. But Jesus definitely tells us to let our light shine before men so they can see our good works and glorify the Father in heaven.

A strong, active and faithful congregation will strengthen weak members and have a good influence on the community. A dead or lukewarm church is a bad influence and will turn people away from Christ.

The Light of Life

When we follow the Lord, we will have the light of life, and will definitely let our light shine by zeal, enthusiasm and doing the work Christ gave us to do. Jesus said,

John 12:35-36
So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
ESV

For the good of the cause of Christ let us always keep our light shining brightly. David declared in the long ago, “You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light (Psalms 18:28).
