A CONVERSION IN PHILIPPI

On the second evangelistic journey Paul and Silas were shamefully treated in Philippi. They were severely flogged and committed to the jailor, who was commanded to keep them safely. This he did by putting them in the inner cell and fastening their feet in the stocks.

What Must I Do To Be Saved?
Paul and Silas were heroic in their faith. They were praying and singing unto God, when about midnight there was a great earthquake that shook the prison and released the prisoners. The jailor, rather than be humiliated by the Roman government was about to take his life, when Paul cried out, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” After falling down trembling, he brought Paul and Silas out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved” (Acts 16:30)?

Believe in the Lord Jesus and You Will Be Saved
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved—you and your household” (Acts 16:31). The jailor was a Gentile and had no or very little knowledge about Jesus. So how could he believe? It was necessary that the word of God be presented to him about Christ and his plan to save man. This they did (Acts 16:32).

Belief + Repentance + Baptism = Forgiveness
This teaching involved repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We know this is the case, because the jailor washed their stripes on their backs, and took them somewhere. Where did he take them? He took them to a place where there was water sufficient to baptize—and he and his family were immersed into Christ for the forgiveness of sins. The Bible says, “Then immediately he and his family were baptized (Acts 16:33).

The Jailor Was Saved By Faith, But Not Faith Alone!
The jailor and everyone today are saved by faith, but not faith alone. After the jailor believed, he repented of his sins, evidenced by acts of kindness toward Paul and Silas. Then he took Paul and Silas, and he and his family were baptized to be saved. All of these actions are how he was saved by faith, and was summed up by this eyewitness statement of the author: “The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household” (Acts 16:34).

The Saved Are Filled With Joy after Baptism
Conversions recorded in Acts of Apostles, confirm that no one ever was joyful of their salvation until after they were baptized, predicated on their faith, repentance, and confession! Have you rejoiced because you were baptized into Christ, where all spiritual blessings are to be found (Ephesians 1:3, 7)? Have you been baptized in order to be saved (Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:21)?

THANKSGIVING

happy-thanksgiving-2016

The exhortation of the apostle Paul to the church at Colossae is also pertinent today for churches, families and the country:

Colossians 3:14-16
But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
NKJV

God wants all people and especially those who belong to Christ, to know the peace of God, to be thankful and to express our gratitude through joyful songs of praise and instruction. We are to be thankful every day and this spirit is symbolized in our national day of gratitude for our blessings vouchsafed to us by our forefathers.

This Thursday we will observe one of our best American holidays—Thanksgiving. It is rooted in our history and our best traditions. Indeed we have a lot to be thankful for in spite of the economic turmoil. But with all of our bounty many people have negative attitudes, and are not thankful for what we do have. Briefly we shall look at three different attitudes from the story Jesus described in the Gospel of Luke—The Ten Lepers. Continue reading “THANKSGIVING”

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

By

king-james-bible

In regards to the Constitution of the United States of America, there are two different ways of interpreting its meaning and application to the citizens living today. The Non-Progressives believe it should be understood in its original meaning as interpreted by the three branches of government when it was inaugurated. The Progressives believe that it should be interpreted subjectively to whatever they want it to mean to fit their philosophy and prejudices.

THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION

Historically, its application has been based upon the case law hammered out for over two hundred years. If it is not sufficient for today’s world, the founding fathers included the amendment process. In my view the Constitution should be understood in the fair meaning of the words as they were used when it was signed into law. Therefore, in regards to the Constitution I am Non-Progressive. PICK YOUR POISON

poisoned-minds

Paul and Barnabas entered the Jewish synagogue at Iconium and so spoke that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and “poisoned their minds against the brethren.”

POISONED MINDS:

Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands (Acts 14:1-3 NKJV).
